” Chop your own firewood, and it will warm you twice” Henry Ford.
With each and every day that passes, the general consensus of the American consumer grows more and more discontent at the constant financial abuse to the working class citizen.
The fantasy that any form of monopoly is illegal is a simple slap in the face of the working man. Every time you go to the grocery store, every time you go to the gas pump, every time you turn around, your paycheck is being hijacked from your wallet. We at Rebuilderinabox (alternatorstarterrebuildkits.com) are sick of it, and intend to do something about it…
It is indeed a sad day, when manufacturers intentionally engineer their products to fail when the warranty is up. Not only leaving the unsuspecting consumer broken and lost, but quite often, not even an option of where to take their purchase to be repaired.
They are forced to go to the closest dealer because no one else has the knowledge of how to fix the problem, or the ability to buy parts at a reasonable cost, because the factory will only sell parts to a factory authorized distributor. What ever happened to customer appreciation instead of customer victimization? When Henry Ford sold you a car, he GAVE you a tool box and a set of instructions on how to fix your own vehicle.
He wanted you to be happy with your purchase, so you would come back to him out of loyalty, not because he had you over a barrel. The golden age of the Model T and the frontiers it carved have been long since forgotten, but the trail it blazed for the do it yourselfer lives on…

Performance Starter & Alternator, Inc. (the parent company of various websites including Rebuilder in a Box) was started in a warehouse in 1985. Performance, Inc and all of it’s employees are located in Canton, Ohio the home of the professional football hall of fame. Ever since our inception, the primary function has been as a quality oriented starter alternator rebuilder.
Many local auto repair facilities were extremely frustrated at the dependability level of of electrical products that were previously available at local big box and privately owned part stores. So in the beginning, we catered only to local garages. We were looking for the professional mechanic, not so much the general public.
After the first decade, an extremely good reputation for quality, and customer base had been established. We built and moved to our new facility at 2031 Harrison SW, and the parent business resides there to this date. Very little architectural expansion has occurred since that time.
Over the later years, we have remained small and focused to a customized rebuilding strategy, in order to maintain a quality oriented product. Opportunities to expand into an assembly line style facility, in order to mass produce products, were shied away from to stay with a custom rebuild internal structure with a very reasonably priced product.
Most recently, our new pet project “Rebuilder in a Box” has become a well respected web presence as a starter alternator kit supplier, with extremely specific how to rebuild videos. Our site is the only one of it’s kind, particularly because it enables the do it your selfer to rebuild a current (newer) unit, with quality parts, just as good as the professionals. Our “mantra” is not to show you how WE rebuild here in the shop, but how the working man can do it at home with BASIC hand tools.
And so, after 4 decades in the auto repair business, we have moved past patting ourselves on the back because of the size and the sophistication of our tool boxes. The people who really deserve a pat on the back are the men and women who endure the blazing sun and the frigid temperatures with only BASIC tools. They can’t call the Snap-on truck and have a $600 set of dead blow hammers and an $1100 set of pullers delivered, because they drive a ’98 Taurus that needs fixed, so they can get to work in the morning.
